The Latvian Beekeeping History Museum was opened in 1984 and is currently managed by Ogre Technical School. Initially, the museum was established on the second floor of the former Beekeeping Experimental Station building, while the ground floor was used for the school's teaching apiary and classrooms. The museum is located in Vecbebri, a historically significant place associated with the development of modern beekeeping, next to Vecbebri Manor, where the Beekeeping and Horticulture School was established in 1922. Thus, the Latvian Beekeeping History Museum is closely connected with the history of education, science and the development of beekeeping in Latvia.
Today, the museum is an important place for learning and discovery, as Ogre Technical School offers training in the profession of beekeeper, combining theoretical knowledge with practical work in the teaching apiary and museum exhibitions. Beekeeping is presented here as an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and technology, naturally fitting into the STEM education approach.
Over the past century, beekeeping has undergone significant technological changes, yet its fundamental elements – bees and the work involved in caring for them – have remained unchanged. The museum exhibitions explore bee biology, the structure of a bee colony, beekeeping technologies and innovations, which are also incorporated into the learning process, encouraging young people's interest in natural sciences and practical research.
Special attention at the museum is given to children and young people. Educational and practical activities are offered, allowing participants to explore the life cycle of bees, the process of honey production and the importance of pollination in ecosystems, as well as try simple experiments and observations. These activities develop curiosity, logical thinking and an understanding of natural processes.
The museum garden features a teaching apiary and honey harvest displays. Visitors have the opportunity to taste honey with bread and milk, as well as purchase beekeeping products to take home. The Latvian Beekeeping History Museum invites families, schoolchildren, young people and teachers to book museum visits, educational activities and themed guided tours that inspire an interest in nature and a sustainable future.
